First Trip to Japan: A Packing List Built Around Your Itinerary

Make three lists before packing: items needed before boarding, items needed on arrival, and items needed only for a specific activity. Your passport and entry documents belong in the first group; a charging method and your first night's address belong in the second. Hiking equipment or formal clothes belong in the third only if the itinerary calls for them. Save offline copies of bookings and an emergency contact. Check entry rules for your own nationality and itinerary with official sources; a generic packing article cannot decide visa eligibility.

Compare a carry-on bag, checked suitcase, and day bag on actual dimensions, weight, access to documents, stairs and transfers, and your carrier's current allowance. Pack a small first-day kit: documents, medication in its original packaging, charging cable, one change of clothes, and weather-appropriate layer. Do not assume a battery, medicine, or food item can cross a border simply because it is sold at home; check the airline and Japanese official rules for the exact item.

Checklist: passport validity; entry requirements; airline baggage rules; accommodation address; payment backup; phone compatibility; seasonal clothing; any medicine or restricted goods checked individually; space for return luggage.
