SIM, eSIM or Wi-Fi for Japan: Choose by Compatibility First
Check whether the phone is unlocked and supports the offered eSIM or physical SIM before comparing data prices. Then note the trip length, number of devices, expected navigation and video use, voice or SMS needs, and the first place you need internet. A plan that activates only after an app download is awkward if you cannot connect on arrival; keep the installation instructions offline.
Compare three routes on the same assumptions. eSIM avoids swapping a card but needs a compatible phone and an activation method. A physical SIM needs a suitable slot and delivery or pickup. Portable Wi-Fi can serve several devices but adds a device to charge and return. Compare full-trip cost, speed or data policy, coverage claims, support hours, refund terms and what happens after the included allowance. A free hotspot is useful as backup, but its availability should not be assumed for every journey.
Checklist: unlocked phone; exact model compatibility; activation timing; data allowance and reduced-speed policy; tethering; voice/SMS need; support method; return procedure; an offline map and address. Read each seller's current terms rather than inferring performance from a headline data allowance.
